Executive Summary
This 1980’s report was commissioned to investigate geothermal resources as alternate energy sources to hydrocarbons after the oil shocks of the 1970’s. The report compiled much of the pre-existing temperature data in the Gippsland and Otway Basins that was of variable quality. More valuable was the approximately 50 new temperature points directly measured using a min/max thermometer from the base of the water screen in deep water bores long after drilling. These temperature points represent high quality equilibrium temperature data not needing corrections for drilling disturbance. In many part of the basins the temperature data shows free flowing aquifer units can yield water up to 60oC and in the Portland Trough up to 80oC. The report details many of the direct uses for such hot water, such as green housing, aquaculture, tourist spas with some development of the described resources having since occurred. For example, the Peninsula Hot Springs Spa Complex was developed on the basis of the temperature data from the Nepean 38 bore. The more recent reports of the Geothermal Atlas Project undertook heat flow calculations to allow deep crustal temperature modelling. This heat flow approach only complements, rather than replaces, the shallow direct temperature work of this report. Whilst the shallower water resources do have lower temperatures, the water is easy to access and less risky to commercialise so that many new projects are still likely to find the data in this report valuable.
