Abstract
An application for a grant under the Rediscover Victoria Drilling Initiative (Round 3) by Goldsearch Ltd was granted in February 2010 to drill 2 holes at its Long Ridge Prospect within EL 4843 in east Victoria. The main objectives were to:

  • Test for gold and base metal mineralisation below the Silurian-Cambrian structural contact,

  • Identify the cause of the coincident IP and magnetic anomaly at Long Ridge.

This report summarises the results and geological interpretation of one diamond hole drilled between March 2010 and January 2011.

The broken nature of the rock slowed drilling considerably, to the extent that drilling was suspended in March 2010, and resumed after the winter break in November. The hole was completed at 435 metres depth having passed through the main IP target without encountering signs of mineralisation.

Silurian siltstones mixed with Ordovician shale have been thrust over the Cambrian volcanic sequence during the Tabberabberan Orogeny. The thrusting is seen as a series of listric thrust planes with an overall dip to the south-west, but fairly consistent cleavage developed with a 20 to 30° dip to the south west.

As predicted from the modelling of the resistivity data, two sequences of volcanics were intersected. The top sequence is of weakly silica-sericite altered andesitic lavas, while the lower sequence is of essentially weakly altered andesite lavas with variable quartz-carbonate veining.

Pyrophyllite and silica-sericite alteration of the volcanics appears to be mainly confined to zones of thrusting.

On considering the difficulty in drilling LRD001 and the lack of any mineralisation encountered, the second hole was not drilled.
