Summary Thick potential source rocks within the onshore Victorian Otway Basin accumulated in the Portland Trough, and the Port Campbell and Tyrendarra Embayments during the early Cretaceous.

Organic richness increases towards these embayments and trough as well as southwards towards the present offshore.

Gas-prone vitrinitic macerals predominate; however, in some locations there is a marked increase in the quantity of oil-prone lacustrine macerals.

Within each of the biostratigraphic time zones, maturity levels vary laterally and vertically. This is a result of the variations through time of the subsidence rates across the basin. Present results confirm that there are at least three large ‘kitchens’ within the Tyrendarra, Portland and Port Campbell regions.
