GU Report 19 - New 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of gold deposits in central Victoria: final report
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Product description:Introduction This report documents the results of 40Ar/39Ar analyses carried out as part of a collaborative project between GeoScience Victoria and the University of Melbourne to investigate the timing and ore fluid geochemistry of major gold-bearing systems in central Victoria. This work provides one of several tools available as part of GeoScience Victoria’s Gold Undercover Initiative. Previously published 40Ar/39Ar geochronological data, as well as related problems in data collection and interpretation, were highlighted in an earlier report (see Fu et al., 2007). In an interim report (Fu et al., 2008), we provided a summary of samples selected for 40Ar/39Ar dating analyses and available results to June, 2008, which further constrained the timing of gold mineralisation in central Victoria, Australia. This final report is an extended version of the interim report with additional 40Ar/39Ar age data. Overall, the report documents 40Ar/39Ar laser probe and step-heating furnace analyses conducted on mineral separates and whole-rock samples, mainly from the Castlemaine – Chewton, Bendigo, Lockington, Fosterville, Malmsbury, Maldon, Ballarat, Mount Piper and Woods Point gold fields or prospects.
