Executive Summary
This report presents the results from visible-near-infrared (VNIR) and shortwave-infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral scanning of diamond drill cores from seven deposits in the central Victorian goldfield. The cores were scanned using CSIRO’s HyLoggingTM system during a trial conducted by Geoscience Victoria (now Geological Survey of Victoria) in 2007 for the Gold Undercover initiative. The drill cores analyzed were selected as representative profiles through mineralized structures based on lithogeochemical and hyperspectral analysis of drill core samples collected from multiple drill cores from each of the goldfields previously presented in Arne et al. (2008; Arne D.C., House, E. & Lisitsin, V., 2008. Lithogeochemical haloes surrounding central Victorian gold deposits: Part 1 – Primary alteration systems. Geoscience Victoria Gold Undercover Report 4. Department of Primary Industries, Victoria.)

The results of this investigation demonstrate that fresh diamond drill core has substantial mineralogical variation that can be attributed to the effects of cryptic hydrothermal alteration that might not otherwise be recognized. This study provides important baseline data to guide future exploration for orogenic gold deposits in Victoria using hyperspectral techniques, as well as demonstrating how the data can be integrated with lithogeochemical data.
