Abstract A regional assessment of the clay resources of the Parwan Valley, south west of Bacchus Marsh, revealed the presence of large deposits of kaolinitic silts. These were sampled, analysed and test-fired. The tests indicated that although large reserves may be available, the quality of the raw material does not appear to be high. No true ball clays were found. There may be some application for this material in lower quality ceramic products. Clays of higher quality may be found in some parts of the valley untested during the current survey, but exploration would require drilling, rather than the surface sampling carried out to date.
