Abstract The advent of the production of very large quantities of high quality treated effluent, which will occur when Melbourne's latest sewage treatment plant at Carrum is commissioned, offers a unique challenge.

Eventually water of this quality will prove to be of too great a value to be disposed of to the ocean.

Without additional tertiary treatment some of this water could be used directly in certain industries or perhaps for the irrigation of special crops, but unless special reticulation systems are constructed, only a small portion of the water could be used in this way.

Aquifers, on the other hand provide a natural means of reticulation, with the added benefit of purifying the waste water, and overcoming most of the psychological problems associated with its reuse...
