Abstract This report provides a summary of mineral exploration undertaken within the Grampians and Ararat 1:100 000 map areas, western Victoria since the Exploration Licence (EL) reporting system was introduced in 1965. The report includes detailed summaries of the exploration targets, geochemical programs, results and expenditure obtained from EL reports submitted to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. Each summary includes the period the tenement was held, the tenement location and a summary of the exploration target and tenement geology. Further extensive summaries of mapping, geochemistry, geophysics and drilling are provided, detailing any anomalous results obtained from the work programmes.

Tables and maps within the appendices provided a further synthesis of the mineral exploration history of the Grampians and Ararat 1:100 000 map areas. Tables summarise the geochemical work conducted on the ELs, significant drill intersections, and overviews of work conducted and key exploration targets. Maps indicate the position of the EL boundaries.

Exploration within the Grampians and Ararat 1:100 000 map areas has been largely directed at identifying gold, within areas of known mineralisation as well as adjacent to historical alluvial goldfields. This lead to the discovery and current exploitation of the Stawell Gold Mine, the largest current gold producer in Victoria. The other main focus for exploration has been for base metal mineralisation resulting in the discovery of the Mt Ararat Cu prospect.
