Abstract A detailed geophysical survey was flown over the Omeo 1:100 000 map sheet in eastern Victoria during 1995 for the Geological Survey of Victoria, as part of the Victorian Initiative for Minerals and Petroleum Eastern Highlands project. Previous magnetic and radiometric regional data acquired by the Bureau of Mineral Resources in 1975 has been superseded in this area by the new data. The Omeo survey data was acquired by Geo Instruments using a helicopter and has 200 metre line spacing. The data includes magnetics, radiometrics and a digital terrain model, and was processed by Engineering Computer Services. Products available from this survey include a range of maps and images on transparency or paper. In addition to hardcopy products, data is also available in digital form.

Magnetic data reflect magnetic and non-magnetic intrusives, metamorphics, sediments, volcanics and dykes. Compositional variations are reflected in the radiometric data. The digital terrain model is useful for tracing structures.

Ordovician metamorphics and sediments are non-magnetic with high magnetic signatures superimposed from deep magnetic sources. These metamorphics and sediments are intruded by Silurian, Devonian and Triassic plutons. The plutons are both magnetic and non-magnetic. Rifts formed in the Silurian and Devonian and are filled with sediments and volcanics, some have magnetic units and most have radiometric differences. The major structural trend in the area is to the north west. This is the direction of the Ensay and Kiewa Faults.

The area has a long history of alluvial and hard rock gold mining in the Omeo-Swifts Creek Goldfields. The Benambra base metal mine at Wilga and Currawong is producing commercial amounts of copper, zinc and also silver.
