Executive Summary
Seven new heat flow estimates and three revised historic estimates address the paucity of geothermal data in the Stavely region. The Geothermal Atlas Project undertaken by the Geological Survey of Victoria saw the compilation and collection of new geothermal data across Victoria. It included estimates of crustal heat flow from boreholes that penetrate to a depth below the interference of surficial climate effects. The data in this report was collected from the Stavely region in western Victoria in collaboration with the University of Melbourne, Geoscience Australia and Stavely Minerals Ltd. Detailed temperature data was collected from the Government STAVELY stratigraphic drilling bores and also from some deep Stavely Mineral exploration bores. Rock thermal conductivity was measured by the Optical Conductivity Scanner method at University of Melbourne and heat flow estimates were then derived from this data. The new heat flow estimates generally range between 60 – 80 mW/m2. This is similar to other values already collected and is also typical for Palaeozoic continental terranes globally. These typical crustal heat flow values are lower that several historic estimates from VIMP bores and the Stawell Gold Mine in the Stavely region, but re-examination of the thermal conductivity from these bores suggests lower values that result in lower heat flows, with the revised values similar to many of the newer estimates.
