Abstract This report reviews scoria and tuff quarrying in Victoria. The study was undertaken to compliment a study of features of scientific significance of the Newer Volcanic Province of Victoria, sponsored by a National Estate grant to the National Trust and the Geological Society of Australia (Victorian Division).

Scoria and tuff are pyroclastic products which generally form unconsolidated deposits and are therefore able to be excavated without blasting, i.e are "rippable". At the time of the study there were some 31 scoria pits and 14 tuff pits operating, mostly located in the western Victoria basalt plains sub-province.

Commercial pits are licensed under the Extractive Industries Act (1966), while shire councils may operate pits for their own uses on Crown or private land (Local Government Act (1984)). The report covers all licensed and shire pits operating at the time of the study.

The five scoria pits which supply the Melbourne metropolitan area account for more than 50% of the total Victorian scoria production. In rural Victoria, scoria and tuff are produced in equal quantities. Production statistics are given for 1985 to 1989 for metropolitan scoria, and rural (licensed and shire) scoria and tuff pits.

The properties, uses, consumption by use, and typical costs of scoria and tuff are described.

The siting and reclamation of scoria and tuff pits are discussed. Recommendations are made with respect to siting pits so that they have minimal visual impact on the surrounding countryside.

The scoria and tuff deposits, pit statistics (production and resource levels) and council use of scoria and tuff, are described for the fourteen shires in which there is at least one operating pit. An assessment of the resource remaining in licensed pits for each shire is given.

In the final section of the report there is a description and location map for each opertating pit referred to in the report.
