Abstract Ballarat has had a long history of gold mining, beginning with the early gold rushes of the 1850s and many reports, papers and books have been published on this period of Victoria's past. This report attempts to draw together the most important records into a concise and accessible document. The Ballarat district encompasses a number of different goldfields such as Ballarat East, Ballarat West, Little Bendigo, Staffordshire Reef-Berringa, Pitfield Plains, Jubilee, Haddon and Smythesdale. These goldfields have been divided into alluvial and quartz reef types and then grouped together on the basis of lead (pronounced leed) systems for alluvial fields; and similarity of structural style, form of mineralisation or proximity to each other for quartz reef goldfields. Together with the accompanying mines database, new production totals have calculated for each of the major goldfields (e.g. Ballarat East goldfield, nearly 47,000 kg of gold and the Ballarat-Buninyong alluvial lead system, 88,175 kg) which in many cases are significantly greater than those previously published. The mines database has been developed to store and manipulate statistical information such as production, depth of workings, and shaft location on each of the mines researched.
