Product description:AbstractIn 2007, the Victorian Government committed $5 million over four years to the “Rediscover Victoria” initiative to increase the level of exploration expenditure in the State. Approximately $2.5 million of this funding was directed to the Rediscover Victoria Drilling Initiative, in collaboration with industry. Rediscover Victoria Drilling (RVD) grants were intended to encourage the explorers to undertake drilling programs in greenfields areas and stimulate drill testing of new geologic concepts in areas previously seen as either higher risk or having limited prospectivity. The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Victoria sought proposals from holders of exploration or mining licences under the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990, and in the final Round, under the Geothermal Energy Resources Act 2005, for RVD grants to be used to undertake innovative exploration drilling projects. Amongst the benefits from greater exploration drilling in greenfields areas, that flow back to the State, were significant advances in geological understanding and resource potential. During the Initiative which ran through to June 2011, the RVD drilling projects increased Victoria’s geological knowledge base, demonstrated the potential for accelerating successful discoveries, and advanced the perception of Victoria’s minerals prospectivity with industry.
