Product description:

Victorian Coal: A 2006 Inventory of Resources is a deliverable of the $1.5 million, three year Developing Latrobe Valley Resources Future Initiative, developed as part of the Moving Forward Provincial Victoria Statement. The Initiative support and encourage new clean brown coal- based investment in the Latrobe Valley.

The report provides a high level summary of Victoria’s known coal assets which identifies the location of the State's coal deposits, quantifies the resources, and identifies areas of further research to facilitate current and future use of the resources.

The study is also presented in GIS format to enable searching for prospective areas on-line and has been designed to be compatible with Departmental systems. This data will be incorporated into Geoscience Victoria databases to ensure that DPI has an up-to-date and comprehensive record of Victoria's brown coal resources that can be accessed by key stakeholders and the general public. This will be the first time information collated will be publicly available through online services.

The project also delivered a map of Victoria's coal resources to assist with attracting investment by providing a visual tool to demonstrate the location and quantity and quality of brown coal deposits across the state. The map highlights the currently unallocated coal fields in the Latrobe Valley.
