Product description:AbstractGeochemical data, collected from numerous company exploration programs across Victoria, are now available digitally in the public domain. As these programs have been conducted using various sampling and analytical parameters over a variety of geological terrains, their raw, analytical results are not directly comparable. This report provides the results of statistical processing of geochemical exploration data, designed to make them comparable, and thus enhance their value in regional exploration. The statistical methods have been applied to test datasets for about 30,800 –80# stream sediment samples and 205,000 –80# soil samples collected in eastern Victoria. The datasets were chosen partly to eliminate some of the variables inherent in sampling / analysis, including mesh size, in order to simplify subsequent processing. The data have been standardised, or levelled, to account for remaining, important variables of analytical technique and geology. This has been achieved by producing standard normal distributions (containing z-scored values) for each subset of data relating to a particular analytical method, or geological unit. Levelling has significantly altered the ranking of metal values relative to that in the raw, unprocessed state. Many of the formerly recognised geochemical anomalies have been enhanced by levelling, while some have been diminished. Numerous unexplained anomalies are worthy of re-examination. In the process of examining the original data, and irrespective of the levelling results, many deficiencies in the geochemical exploration programs have become apparent.
