Abstract
The Geological Survey of Victoria celebrated its 150th anniversary (sesquicentenary) in 2002. In order to celebrate the occasion an exhibition highlighting the history of the Geological Survey was staged at the Melbourne Museum between May and October 2002.

The exhibition was officially opened by the Minister for Energy and Resources, Ms Candy Broad, on May 3, 2002 to an audience of approximately 200 present and former GSV staff together with representatives from government, industry and academia. The exhibition, entitled ‘Beneath our Feet’ displayed geological maps dating back to 1852, spectacular mining models built in the 1850s, early and modern scientific instruments, rocks and minerals, and recent high tech images reflecting Victoria's geology.

The exhibits provided a unique perspective on the development of Victoria’s society and recorded the changes in the science, techniques and technologies that geologists use to understand the nature of the rocks beneath our feet.

This report documents the content of the exhibition and includes images of the exhibits and exhibit labels, together with theme and story boards used to describe the development of geological mapping and ideas within the Geological Survey over 150 years. Also appended is a teacher education kit for use by both primary and secondary students, designed to accompany the exhibition.
