Executive Summary

This volume complements the earlier publication Oil and Gas Resources of Victoria / Gippsland Basin, 1998. The report details the identified petroleum and nonpetroleum gas resources in the Victorian portion of the Otway Basin. It contains a brief overview of the geology of the basin, summarises technical data, field production history and also describes the location of all known petroleum and nonpetroleum gas accumulations.

The Otway Basin, Torquay Sub-basin and Bass Basin are part of several continental margin basins that developed along the southern Australian continent. The Otway Basin extends from the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria to Cape Jaffa in South Australia. The Torquay Sub-basin is located between Cape Otway and the Mornington Peninsula. The Victorian sector of the Bass Basin lies offshore between the Mornington Peninsula and Wilson’s Promontory.

The most significant hydrocarbon occurrences in the Otway Basin are the gas fields(onshore / offshore) in Early and basal Late Cretaceous reservoirs in Victorian and South Australian parts of the basin. Most gas accumulations have a low condensate content, but some occurrences contain a high proportion of carbon dioxide. Thin oil columns in basal Tertiary age reservoir rock at Lindon -1 (28º API) and in Early Cretaceous reservoir rocks at Windermere -1 (38º API) were discovered.

Initial recoverable gas reserves of the Victorian portion of the Otway Basin (Port Campbell region) were estimated to be about 59 billion cubic feet (Bcf). The remaining reserves, including new discoveries as at 30 June 2001, are estimated to be 36.7 Bcf and 893.0 Bcf for onshore and offshore respectively.

Production of natural gas from the Victorian onshore fields supplies domestic and industrial users in western Victoria through a 200 kilometre (km) gas pipeline network. An additional 130 km of gas pipeline links the Otway Basin network back to Lara and hence to the Victorian and South East (SE) Australian gas network. Depleted onshore fields in the Port Campbell area are used for underground gas storage to supply gas during peak demand periods.
