Product description:

Preface Victoria is one of the world's major gold producing provinces with a total gold production of 2.45 million kg. Approximately 11 per cent of this production came from deeply buried alluvial deposits characteristically covered by Cainozoic basalts and commonly referred to as deep leads. Major reports on these deposits are restricted to Memoir 7 of the Geological Survey, "The Deep Leads of Victoria" by S.B. Hunter, published in 1909 and a revised and abbreviated version entitled "Deep Leads of Victoria" published in 1937.

As both of these publication have been out of print for many years and the deep leads were assuming greater importance as a possible further source of gold and as a source of groundwater, the Department commissioned Mr. Frank Canavan to prepare a reappraisal of these deposits. This Bulletin represents a synthesis of the data contained in Memoir 7 and more recent work, and will remain the authorative reference on deep leads in Victoria both as a potential source of gold and groundwater for many years to come.

The original intention was to publish the Bulletin together with twelve deep lead maps on a scale of 1:100,000, referred to in the text as Map 1, Map 2, etc. At the time of printing, six maps have been published. These are No. 1 Ararat, No. 2 St Arnaud, No. 3 Beaufort, No. 4 Dunolly, No. 5 Creswick and No. 10 Albury. (Note: These 6 maps are included with the hardcopy version of this report)

Since this Bulletin was written, further investigations in certain locations by the Geological Survey and exploration companies have shed new light on some of the deep lead systems and associated mines. In particular a mine data compilation project, initiated by the Geological Survey, has revealed information which would allow some changes to the Beaufort, Creswick and Dunolly 1:100,000 map sheets; the project involved field checking of sites, and a compilation of some departmental mining records.
