GSV Bulletin 23 - Biographical sketch of the founders of the Geological Survey of Victoria

Product description:Preface The memory of the geological pioneers of Victoria who rendered such good service to the State deserves to be kept fresh in the minds of those who are benefiting by their labours. Much of their field work was done under conditions which have quite ceased to exist, some of it in country which they were the first white men to visit. Their maps are models of accuracy and have withstood the test of over 50 years, and it is not without good reason that a writer in the Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society (Vol. 35) referred to the Victorian geological survey of that time as "one of the most complete geological surveys ever organized, except, perhaps, that of the United States Territories, under Dr. F.V. Haydon." This survey was terminated, and the staff disbanded, in 1869. The writer was personally acquainted with each of the geological officers dealt with in these short sketches, as he entered the Geological Survey in 1864, and feels that unless he undertook the task of recording their services, no one else is likely to do so. The details have been culled from the most reliable sources, and from personal knowledge. It was a matter of difficulty to obtain a portrait of each subject, but this has been done, with one exception of Mr. Charles S. Wood, the first analyst to the survey. The bibliography, which follows the sketch of the life of each geologist, prepared by Mr. D.J. Mahony, M.Sc., at the cost of much research, includes only such reports, papers, and maps, as were published while their author was a member of the Geological Survey Staff, and others which deal directly with Victorian geology. No attempt has been made to give a complete list of works published before the appointment or after the resignation of their authors. For convenience, the maps have been separated from the reports, but both are given, as far as possible, in the order in which they were prepared. The original spelling of place-names has been retained. E.J. DUNN. Download The downloadable version of this report is supplied in PDF and TIF formats.
